ORIGIN, HISTORY & DEVELOPMENT

· Established in 1957 aiming at serving general culture and the academic book, where it realized distinguished success. Later on it took two directions on the way of realizing its aim: modernity and heritage for being integrated and none can dispense with the other. So, it issued numerous academically revised books and selected the best of the writings about the age problems.

· Paid special attention to children who form the majority of the Arab society and the most important category in it. Accordinly, it released miscellaneous appropriate publications for them so as to ennoble their concepts and the information they have.

· Having borne in mind the value of encyclopedias which involve express and necessary service for the literate in general, it took great interest in them and provided the market with specialized encyclopedias, and is now dedicated to issue a general encyclopedia on 'The Islamic Civilization'.

· Concerned in the free dialogue with others no matter how far different in attitude they be, because Dar Al-Fikr believes in the fact that truth appears only when ideas collide. It, therefore, issued a series of "Dialogues for a New Century". Every book of which displays a dialogue about a specific topic between two researchers. Each researcher handles it from his own point of view. Then they respond to each other, refuting or advocating.

· Found that it was not enough to issue its publications on paper culture containers. Dar Al-Fikr, therefore, produced the computerized book on compacted disks (CDs) and participated in the "INTERNET", introducing through it an electronic sales program called "FURAT" which enables the reader to buy whatever books he wishes. Subsequently, it has been able to communicate with the whole world.

· Dar Al-Fikr, therefore, presents a remarkably abundant production when compared with other publishing houses. It has published over 1400 titles up to date, adding to them 70 others annually, including a miscellaneous supply of specialties and general culture which represents the works of well-known authors and revisers from Syria and other Arab states. All of this much is produced by a highly experienced team in marvelous printing and production.

· Offers an annual prize called "Dar Al Fikr's Prize for Creativity and Literary Criticism".

Children section: General Definition

Having known the value and importance of the Children Literature in our cultural, social, religious and civilizational life, Dar Al-Fikr started paying special attention to this field at the early stage of its rise beginning with a limited number of series. Late in the seventeens of the twentieth century, however, it initiated Fikr-Series (Salasil al-Fikr), that were supervised by the well-versed Arab educator, Professor Ali Hamdallah. It was an ambitious enterprise, which aimed at issuing more than 1000 books involving the various branches of knowledge particularly for children. The number of the titles issued out of that series was fifty.

At the onset of the nineteens, Dar Al-Fikr felt, through its staff, the necessity of innovation. As a result, it undertook great missions. It, therefore, placed a broad spectrum of capacities handy at the disposal of the Children Department Director, paving the way for him to transfer our publishing house to another different stage. Then, through mutual cooperation between the general manager, the Children Department Director and a number of specialized graphic designers, illustrators and painters, a large number of series have been issued, realizing distinct presentation in this field, which enjoyed a high quality whether in text, in illustrations, in production or in binding.

At the outset of 2000, Dar Al-Fikr has laid an ambitious and efficient plan for innovating its issues to keep up with the global technical and informational development. It has determined to make numerous unique, brilliant series - in various methods: printed, computerized, recorded and visualized, with newly created ways of production available and at hand for its readers.

We, therefore, welcome whatever notes offered to us by any of the readers following our issues, take them into consideration and lay them under study so as to realize better advance.
